One very cold November afternoon, I received a call from my sister who had just successfully rescued two dogs from Romania, and as I had always wanted to offer a rescue animal a good home, I found the website of a volunteer-run centre near Toulouse in France (a 5hr drive from my rental flat in Nice) called 'Les Amis des Animaux', which translates as 'Friends of the Animals'...

 

The first image I saw was of two scruffy-looking kittens! - Oscar & Sammy! Their story broke my heart...they were dumped in a bin bag on the side of a road, left for dead on the outskirts of Toulouse. Luckily, a kind woman had found them in time and took them to 'Les Amis' where they were taken to a Vet, and given treatment...Both had been injured and in bad shape -Oscar had also developed a heart condition and Sammy, an infected digestive tract - both would need on-going medication and a lot of love...

To get them to Nice would be an issue - I didn't have a car, and I didn't want to put them through the 7hr round-trip train journey, so I saved up for a €500 return taxi halfway there and back.  So, one bleak morning, I headed out to Beziers, to meet two volunteer drivers, who had driven the kittens halfway, to meet me in the taxi. Oscar & Sammy were scared, but I was SO happy!  I knew they would be finally loved and cared for! They endured the journey back to Nice, I talked to them all the way, propping up my Ipad next to their cat carrier, so they could see a video of birds and countryside on a YouTube video, to help them relax... and before we knew it, we were home - their new home!...

Since then they have transformed! They have very different characters...Oscar (Libra) is calm and quite independent - he adores his white toy mouse and loves food, cuddles and sleeping!   Sammy (Virgo) is a little character, and loves mousing and bird-watching!  They are extremely happy and pampered!... They are the love of my life!...
